Migraine and Its treatment through chiropractic care

Migraine is an intensely severe headache that can induce weakness and is mainly focused on one side of the head.

Migraine and Its distinctions from other headaches

The spine and brain are primary components of the nervous system. When we experience imbalance due to stress, tension is created in our bodies, leading to numerous health issues, one of the most serious being migraines.

It’s evident that almost everyone has suffered from a headache at least once in their life. Most of these headaches occur in the cervical region or due to tension in the back. The difference between a headache and a migraine is that the latter occurs frequently and with much greater intensity of pain. Unlike common headaches, which are usually caused by colds, flu, or other illnesses, migraines are caused by mechanical problems in our spine.

Most migraines are triggered by diet, stress, or even a biological predisposition. We mistakenly think that migraines are caused by food allergies, high blood pressure, or other trauma-related factors. It is also possible that migraines have a genetic or hereditary origin, but they can and should be treated appropriately.

Causes

The main causes of migraine include:

  • changes in sleep habits
  • alcohol consumption
  • exercise or other physical stress
  • withdrawal from caffeine
  • changes in hormone levels during a woman’s menstrual cycle or when using birth control pills.

Additionally, certain foods can trigger migraines, such as chocolate, dairy products, especially some cheeses, foods with monosodium glutamate (MSG), foods containing tyramine, fruits, meat containing nitrates, onions, peanuts, and other nuts and seeds. Also, processed, fermented, pickled, or brined products.

These factors are indeed crucial. They can even cause vasoconstriction, making the blood vessels contract and deliver less blood to the brain, thereby causing a reaction similar to that of a hangover.

How are migraines recognized?

Migraines, unlike other headaches, are characterized by stabbing pains only on one side of the head, which can last for hours or even days, causing a pulsating sensation that worsens with movement and daily activities.

In other cases, you become very sensitive to light and noise. The only way to reduce the pain is usually to lie in bed in darkness and silence. There is a real risk of stroke for those who have suffered from migraines since childhood. Women are more likely to suffer from migraines than men, and if these women experience vision distortion, their stroke risk is higher.

Chiropractic as an effective remedy for migraines

Chiropractic is very effective for treating migraines. The reason is that a chiropractor focuses on working on body balance and eliminating the pressure exerted on the nerve. Chiropractic treatment aims to get to the root of the problem and achieve a state of overall health. People suffering from this condition often experience frequent blockages in cervical vertebrae, causing irritation to nerves that control blood vessel function.

A chiropractor will focus on a thorough examination of the spine to treat migraines. After examining the spine, a chiropractor may conclude that the headache is caused by joint misalignments or fixations irritating the nerve.

This intervention will always be much more effective than temporary pain relief through pills and medications, as the problem will persist. Thanks to chiropractic adjustments, the frequency of migraines can be reduced, as well as the intensity of the pain they cause.

The primary goal is to relieve the pressure exerted on the joint and the surrounding nerve. This achieves immediate headache relief.

Conclusions

Chiropractic is one of the best ways to treat migraines due to its impact on the nervous system. One of the most positive factors is that it does not treat the symptoms of the problem but addresses the root cause. It has no side effects, as it is a natural, safe, and effective alternative to medication and its possible side effects.

Through chiropractic care, a patient suffering from migraines can achieve significant improvements in headaches, both mild and severe.
